Currently, we have only a few foster homes. As a result, we do not have a large number of available Labs.

There are many Labs and other great dogs in need of home, so please check with your local shelters or consider becoming a foster home (click here). This is a great way to find the exact dog you are looking for while helping to save another Lab's life!

Check back often; as foster homes open up, we add more Labs...

Please note: you must send in your adoption application and pass the home visit before we can discuss any questions you have about our available dogs. We will not return phone messages nor answer e-mails about specific available labs on the web site, unless you have already been approved to adopt.

stella

My name is Stella and I am 2 ½ years old. I am a gorgeous black lab that weighs 69 lbs. I am current on all vaccinations and was spayed when I was a puppy. My birthday is in April. I currently live with a loving family. My little brother is developing allergies so I need to find a new family. I love to play in my big backyard and go for long walks. My parents tell me how well I walk on my leash. I love to sleep in my crate but I never pass up the chance to snuggle on the couch. I play well with my little “human” brother; he loves to climb on me and give me kisses. He shares all his snacks with me but mom doesn’t know so…shhh! I also love my older “canine” sister. We cuddle for naps and fetch balls at the park. I follow basic commands (sit, stay and down) and am very smart. In the summer, I love to play in the water and enjoy the nice weather!

cocoa_mandy

Hi there! We are Cocoa and Mandy and we're just little puppies so we don't have a lot of tricks right now...but our foster mom and other GLLR volunteers who have met us think we are cute as buttons! We've never seen a cute button so we're not really sure if this is a compliment!!!

Cocoa is the playful one and Mandy is the shy one but we're very goofy little things....we get really excited when it's time for food -- we jump a couple of feet in the air, get wrapped up in our foster mom's feet and bang our heads in the pantry door trying to get closer to the puppy chow. Our foster mom says that we are "fun with a capital F!"

If you want some fun and energy in your home, please fill out an application today.

lulu

Ms. Lulu here!  I am a very loving and affectionate chocolate female a little over a year old.  At such a young age, not only did I end up at a shelter as a stray but I delivered 8 puppies while there! All my babies were adopted out and I was left all alone.  The shelter contacted GLLR since I was getting depressed being at the shelter for over 2 months.  Now I'm very happy living with a very caring foster home.  I get along terrific with my foster sister and am learning lots of good habits from her.  I know how to sit, down, come and stay out of the kitchen already.  We are working on stay and give paw.  I walk great on a leash and love going for long walks.  Other favorite things to do are chewing on Kongs, rope toys and bones.  I also love to fetch and play Frisbee.  I've done well on crate training and being housebroken. Since I'm so young, I would love to attend a training class with my new family! Please fill out an application for me today!

Sam

Hi! I'm Sam!  A typical goofy male Lab just over 1 year old.  I was surrendered to a shelter due to lack of time and space.  Another person who didn't do their research about us!  Any Lab Lover knows that we are very high energy, need a fenced in back yard to romp and play and do grow up to be a large, exuberant, attention seeking part of the family! I am happily learning about life with my active foster family.  I LOVE to play with the other Lab in the home, will play fetch forever if you let me and am doing my best to slow down around the toddler that lives with me.  Hey, I've got Cabin Fever, doesn't everyone this time of year?!  I'm housebroken, crate trained and working on basic commands.  I only got a few tricks I can show ya, I'll do the best I can, I ain't no perfect Lab yet - but Sam I am!

Please fill out an application for me today!

tanner

Classic good looks AND personality!  My name is Tanner and I’m quite the love bug!  As a 1-2 yr. old lab, I have a lot of energy and really enjoy playing with my 18 month-old foster sister.  I also get along well with my 5 yr. old foster sister.   I was picked up in southern Illinois and with my ribs showing, I had missed too many meals.  Fortunately, I followed the yellow brick road to Great Lakes Lab Rescue and am excited that I’ll be meeting my forever family soon.  I was just “snipped” a few days ago and already feel like a million treats.

I love to cuddle and show my affection and with my ultra-soft coat, you won’t be able to stop doing the same.  I walk very well on a leash and have learned the commands Sit and Come.  I’m such a happy boy that my tail even wags when I’m in a sit.  My foster parents say that I am very smart and confident.  I see my foster sisters chasing a tennis ball and I think that is something I’ll like doing as well.  As a younger lab, I do like food and have surfed the counter, but am learning that is not something I should do.  On the flipside, my foster parents are pleasantly surprised that I haven’t chewed on anything I shouldn’t be chewing on!   This has earned me full run of the house when they’re not home.

Are you looking for someone you can nurture, who can join you in daily long walks, provide companionship and give unconditional love?   If yes, fill out an application so we can meet!!!

cadbury

Cadbury_snow

Cadbury here!  Sorry to disappoint all chocolate lovers out there but I do not have connections with the Easter bunny and I do not come with Cadbury Easter Eggs.  Chocolate and dogs don't mix - silly! What I can offer you is love and LOTS of it!  My foster home says I am the most gentle, loving and sweetest boy ever!  I am guessed to be between 1-2 years old found as a stray when the kind volunteers from Great Lakes took me in.  I am doing well in my foster home where I play nicely with my foster brother, love going for walks and to dog parks, and LOVE to snuggle up on the couch with my foster parents.  I don't mind being crated when home alone and am completely housebroken.  When I first arrived to my foster home, my foster parents thought I may have been abused because fast movements scared me. I'm totally over that now! I'm very confident and inquisitive.  I'm VERY nimble and can jump from a standing position if I really want to get somewhere before my foster brother!  I do have lots of energy and will need a family that is very active and will take me to obedience training.  I enjoy spending time outdoors chasing birds.  When inside, I love to look for birds and squirels from a window.

I am very handsome, have a beautiful shiny coat and what sets me apart from other Labs, a cropped tail.  I can't tell the people at GLLR who my parents were but they think I may be mixed with Vizsla or German Shorthair Pointer.  Labs rule of course! But in my opinion, those are great breeds also! I'm the old world favorite, here today but gone tomorrow - fill out an application for me today!  I won't be here long!

carley

c2

My name is Carly. My foster mom gave me a birthday of September 2009. My story is a rough one. I started out practically starved to death as a newborn puppy and then the person who took me in ended up evicted and I had been living in a car for several weeks until the fine folks at Great Lakes Lab Rescue took me in. I don't know what breed my dad was, but my mom is a very small, super sweet black lab. My foster mom nicknamed me "Floppy" because my ears are always flopping around.

I have a tough girl personality...I love to play fetch and tug-of-war and I'm always taking my plush squeaky toys with me when we go out....I'm not the greatest at bringing them back in. I will bring a toy back if you are sitting down, but I make a game of it if you stand up: then it's your turn to catch me! What fun!!! I love sticks and toys that are bigger than I am and bones are the bomb!

I like to come up on my foster mom's bed and sleep on her pillows. Best news yet: I sleep through the night! I go down about 9:30 and don't bug her until about 7. I'm great in the crate as well and I either go to the door or will whine at my foster mom if I need to go out.

I know how to sit and heel and I walk great on a leash. I'll give you my paw when asked. I'm about 90% there on stay and come. I'm good with other dogs (unless they are too rough with me) and I love to pounce and torment the cat that I live with. However, my foster family isn't too keen on that (nor is the cat for that matter) so we're working on that behavior. Bummer, because I think its a lot of fun!

If you have room in your heart for a sweet girl who will give you lots of kisses and lick your ears, please fill out an application today.

jers

jersey

My name is Jersey and I was born, 12/12/2006.  I’m a 3 year old yellow female with quite a story to tell.  I spent my short life as a breeder for one of those “responsible breeders” you hear about in those stores that sell dogs.  My “owners” felt I was done producing litters of puppies at the puppy mill and took me the vet because I couldn’t walk on my left leg.  When the vet said I needed ACL surgery they told the vet to euthanize me because they didn’t want to spend the money, then just walked out of the vet’s office abandoning me there.  Guess I should be glad they took me to the vet, most of the time they just shoot dogs like me as a “cost savings.”  Nice, huh?

The nice vet did my ACL surgery out of the goodness of his heart because he felt I was too sweet to euthanize.  He said my injury was old and I had needed surgery for along time.  I could’ve told him that ‘cuz I’ve been in pain for most of my life.

The kind folks at Great Lakes Lab Rescue heard my story and took me in.  I’ve been living in a wonderful foster home that helped with my rehab after surgery.  Well, then my other leg started to hurt and I needed ACL surgery on that leg.  I’m recovering with my foster family right now and should be ready to go to my forever family in a month or two.

I can’t believe how much love my foster family gives me!  They say I’m not only sweet but very gentle and loving too.  They call me a velcro dog because I’m always with my humans.  I’m also on the small side at 62 pounds and, because of my surgeries, I must be kept at that weight for the rest of my life.  I’m somewhat skittish because I’ve lived my entire life in a cage but my foster family is gently exposing me to the wonders of the world.  I’m good with dogs, cats and children but slowly getting use to adults who won’t hurt me.

If you are looking to adopt me in a few months, please fill out an application today.  But if you can’t adopt me, I have racked up quite a vet bill as a result of my latest surgery.  Would you help the nice people at Great Lakes Lab Rescue pay my bill?  Please click here to donate.

jack

jackclose

Hi, my name is Jack and I’m a sweet, handsome boy about 2 or 3 years old.  I was found as a stray and spent a couple of months in a pound.  Another rescue group promised to take me.  I waited and waited but they never came for me.  They were about to euthanize me when the kind people at Great Lakes Lab Rescue saved my life.

Turns out I had Heartworm Disease and a nice vet gave me some medicine and I’m all better - good as new even!  Just think – all this could’ve been avoided if I had just been given a heartworm pill every month.  I’m a shorter, stockier Lab at about 60 lbs.  I’m completely housebroken and I know how to sit and come.  We’re working on stay and down.  I walk great on a leash and even sit when my foster dad stops walking.  I’m an active dog.  I walk about 4 miles/day so I’d do best with an active family who likes to take me to dogs parks, on hikes or jogging regularly.  I’m so good I have the run of the house whenever my foster dad must leave me home.  I also get to go to work with my foster dad where I have lots of friends who love me.  Get this – I love to sing with my foster dad.  He howls and I howl along.  He says I have great pipes!

We black dogs have it kinda rough.  There’s something called ‘black dog syndrome” out there which causes us black dogs to be euthanized at a higher rate than other color dogs because we don’t get adopted as quickly.  All this simply because we’ve been born this color – can you believe that??  We black dogs are very sweet on the inside so please don’t let my outside fool you.   Won’t you give me a chance in your home? Please fill out an adoption application for me today!

SOPHIE

COURTESY POSTING:

My name is Sophie and I am 6 years old. I am a mixed breed and weigh about 45 lbs. I am current on all vaccinations and was spayed when I was a puppy.  There are so many things that I enjoy. Here are a few: Going for long walks, driving in the car on a nice day, getting my hair done (grooming) and wearing cute shirts, spending time with my family and eating apples. My most favorite past time of all is playing Frisbee. This is the most fun and I am really good at it! My dad taught me to jump really high! I have had formal obedience training and listen very well. I love to sleep on my dog bed but sneak on the couch when mom and dad aren’t watching. I had an operation last summer to remove bladder stones. My doctor said that they will most likely not return so long as  I remain on my prescription dog food. This should keep me very healthy.

My parents had a baby 18 months ago and I am not adjusting all that well to little fingers poking at me. Most of the time I get along with my human baby brother, but I really prefer older kids. We just found out that he is allergic to me too! I also have a little “canine” sister who is my buddy. We are great friends.

I am very loving and very loyal. I am very obedient and very smart. My parents tease me that I sometime act more like a human than a dog!

P.S. I love frosty paws ice cream….its delicious!

If you are interested in meeting me, please call my mom, Rae, at (773) 354-0740.

If you can't adopt, but would still like to make a difference in a Lab's life, please click here.

If you don't see the exact dog you are looking for: please remember that this is just a list of our current Labs; we always have many other Labs coming in....Another great source for dogs is your local animal shelter.
