Meet Chloe!
Meet Chloe, a sweet and gentle young Lab with eyes that tell a sad story. Chloe was found as a stray and wandered onto a farm where a kind woman took her in and tried to find the owners. When that failed, she turned Chloe in at the local shelter. It was soon discovered that Chloe was pregnant. A shelter is no place to give birth to pups and being black was another strike against her. You see, black dogs are the hardest to adopt out. They are always the last adopted and the first put down at shelters. The shelter reached out to rescue groups to save the life of Chloe and her then unborn pups. That's when Great Lakes Lab Rescue offered to take Chloe so she could give birth in a loving, caring home.
But poor Chloe just can't catch a break. She actually delivered at a foster home during a tornado! Additionally, she tested Heartworm positive, which, if left untreated causes death. Chloe will require immediate treatment after the pups are weaned from her. Heartworm treatment is a very long and painful process as well as costly. Please help us help Chloe and her pups, your contribution will be greatly appreciated!
UPDATE: Chloe's pups have been weaned from her and have had their first set of shots and are in the process of being dewormed. They are ready for adoption. Chloe however, still needs her expensive and painful heartworm treatment. She is currently in a new foster home where she can remain relatively calm and be the sweet dog that she is until she has a clean bill of health.
Due to recent high costs of care for Chloe, her 5 pups and additional dogs that were brought in, unbeknownst to us, with severe illnesses, GLLR will not be able to take in Labs from shelters on death row for a short time as we can not afford to treat other dogs that may have medical needs. GLLR has been placing Labs with loving new families for 10 years this August. It deeply saddens us that the lack of proper care and professionalism from fellow rescuers has caused this great burden on GLLR and has prevented us from saving other lives. I am turning to all volunteers, adoptive families and supporters of rescues to help us in this time of dire need. Great Lakes Lab Rescue will need an immediate fundraiser to help re-coop the costs for the treatment of these dogs. Please contact us if you are willing and able to coordinate any type of fundraiser on our behalf. Monetary donations are also always graciously appreciated and can be sent to Great Lakes Lab Rescue, 205 E. Butterfield Road, #601, Elmhurst, IL 60126.
As with any dog, we take a risk when placing them into rescue, however the Labs sense that they were saved and give us all a lifetime of rewards in return! They need us now more than ever. Thank you for your help, we all appreciate it greatly!
